The gift of friendship

Something exciting is going on at the Friends of the Sealy American Legion – and it goes beyond being the lucky person who gets to stand up and yell, “Bingo!” While veterans groups across the country are struggling to stay in operation, American Legion Post 442 in Sealy is thriving, thanks to a little help from their friends. This active group of community volunteers hosts weekly bingo, drivethrough dinners and plenty of other family-friendly activities throughout the year – even through the pandemic.

It has often been said that when God closes a door, He opens a window. For Patricia Penner, she followed where God was leading her after leaving the oil and gas industry and that path led her straight to helping young women and men deal with their pregnancies when others might be turning their backs on them.

New look at an old technology

It has been four months since Winter Storm Uri crippled Texas. Although my position with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension encourages families and businesses to prepare for disasters, the storm highlighted weaknesses in my own family’s preparedness plan. Since the passing of the storm, I have reflected on ways we could have been better prepared. The utmost need I identified was an improved tool to receive hazardous weather updates.

Growth, employment and sustainability

As the I-10 expansion continues to advance west, the community of Sealy needs to begin to consider the impact that the unprecedented growth will have on the area. How will we improve infrastructure? Will we have enough affordable housing? How will we maintain and attract new businesses and just as important how will we train residents or attract skilled and professional employees into our community?
