“Folks and friends and neighborly people,” came the loudspeaker blaring of the official car of the Gates of Heaven restaurant. “This year’s your ol’ pal Alphonse Wilson … but you know they call me Windy … bringin’ the latest in news of fine Chinese cousin and other newsy stuff.”

My husband, Peter, and I were traveling in Mexico when we suddenly found ourselves without a place to stay. Over the years, all our accommodations while traveling have been quirky in one way or another, but they have all been pretty much what we were expecting, and we’ve never had any insurmountable problems.

The Sealy News is turning 135 years old March 12! It is amazing to be part of such a historical business. We get the privilege to record the history of Austin County from election coverage to historic freezing storm coverage to the 100th birthday of our community members.

Baseball season is here. With the sound of the phrase, “Batter Up!” comes our column about baseball moms.

Last month marked one year since Winter Storm Uri arrived in Texas and caused tremendous devastation throughout our state. As the storm started making its way through Texas, Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of emergency for all 254 counties in preparation for the expected winter weather.

Last week, my high schoolers brought home their course selection forms; the annual process by which, after hours of consideration and conversation, they select their preferences for courses for the next school year. Maybe this process is easier in some households, but around my house this is a stressful time. My teenagers are as decisive as squirrels.

There are lots of great things happening in Sealy ISD. In January, we got a group of 60 students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members together and had conversations about the district’s past and our hopes for the future.

If you follow social media and this local newspaper, you understand that Sealy is not a sleepy boring community. Longtime and new residents can get involved in the many civic associations, volunteer and community groups as well as a variety of school activities.

Black vultures definitely do not win any popularity contests when it comes to wildlife in Texas. They are, however, an important part of our ecosystem and serve their purpose well as nature’s cleanup crew.
