If you follow social media and this local newspaper, you understand that Sealy is not a sleepy boring community. Longtime and new residents can get involved in the many civic associations, volunteer and community groups as well as a variety of school activities.

If you are interested in local government, the county, school and city business meetings are open to the public. There will be city boards and commissions for volunteer opportunities. Spring activities will include downtown and historical events, youth sports, concerts and other venues. Entertainment and recreation include weekly bingo games, monthly dances and many activities and places to enjoy. Volunteer opportunities exist at local church activities, Sealy Christian Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels.

As I share volunteer opportunities, it is with sadness I share the loss of one of Sealy’s most active citizens. Peggy Spradley, Executive Director of the Sealy Chamber of Commerce, passed away last week. I have had the pleasure and opportunity to work with Peggy for many years on various groups. This included the County Historical Commission, Friends of San Felipe State Historic Site which she served as Secretary and most recently through the Sealy Chamber of Commerce and Sealy Convention and Business Bureau.

In the past, she organized field trips for local chamber members and economic development members to various county sites of interest. The local Visitors Guide which so many of us enjoy is the result of her work. Her passion for economic development included her joining me on several trips to the state legislature years ago to testify for funding for the San Felipe State Historic Site. It was her passion that all locals and visitors should visit our State Historic Site to truly understand our Texas History roots. She also could be found at American Legion activities, Boo Bash and just about anywhere a volunteer was needed.

In closing, her absence will create a tremendous void in Sealy. Please join me in honoring her memory by attending and getting involved in an activity that supports our youth, our seniors and our community. You will make new friends and learn more about Sealy’s successes. Rest in Peace, My Dear Friend.
