The City of Sealy’s newly formed Charter Review Commission (CRC) assembled in the W. E. Hill Community Center last Monday to discuss possible changes to the city’s charter for the first time since 2017.

The Sealy City Council met twice last week at the W. E. Hill Community Center to discuss any last-minute tweaks to the city’s budgets before the city manager was approved to move forward on the process.

Residents came out in droves to pack the Wallis City Hall Council Chambers last Wednesday and confront the council about rumors that the Wallis Police Department was at risk of being defunded. One after another, concerned residents voiced their opinion and pleaded with the council to see their perspective.

Starting Sept. 1, eligible Texans over 21 years old will no longer need a license to carry a handgun, concealed or openly.

In mid-June, Governor Greg Abbott signed a host of gun-related bills, including House Bill 1927 that will waive the license and training requirement for citizens not otherwise prohibited from purchasing firearms like people with domestic violence or felony convictions.

The weekly newspaper will continue publication but will be created from a new office once the building at 193 Schmidt Road is sold.

“We have loved our time on Schmidt Road and look forward to producing the same quality coverage of local news, sports and entertainment from a new office,” General Manager Amy Lieb said.

Saturday, Aug. 7, the Sealy Eastside 9th Annual Throwback Fun Day was at the Abe & Irene Levine Family Park.

The Horticulture Committee of Austin County and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Austin County will be hosting a Fall Horticulture Seminar on Friday, Aug. 27, at the American Legion Hall located at 1630 Meyer St, Sealy. Program Registration will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the first presentation beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Over the weekend, the Wallis Police Department issued a press release announcing the capture of 55-year-old Emmanuel Garcia after a pursuit. “Sunday, at approximately 11:23 a.m., Wallis PD Officer Reyes was dispatched to the 5900 Block of Commerce in reference to a male subject attempting to entice an 11-year-old female and a 16-year-old female into his vehicle,” the release says.
