Man charged in cold case slaying of teen

More than a decade after she was last seen alive, a person has been charged in the cold case slaying of Mitchell County eighth-grader Hailey Dunn. Shawn Casey Adkins, 35, of Big Spring, was arrested Monday, June 14, in Big Spring and charged with one count of murder in the death of 13-year-old Dunn.

Council OKs phone system

At Tuesday night’s regular meeting of the Sealy City Council at the W.E. Hill Community Center, a new phone system for City Hall was approved four votes to three. It was at the previous meeting where discussions heated up determining the route the city was going to take.

Blinn College Board adopts $121M budget

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees adopted a $121 million budget for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 during its regular meeting Tuesday, June 15. The budget includes a 2% pay increase for full-time employees and a $25 per course increase for part-time faculty.

The Father’s Day Car Social in downtown Sealy provided bountiful opportunities for fathers to make memories with their children Saturday afternoon. Cars lined Main Street on the right, left and center and more cars spilled into the parking lot – where the Burns Pit BBQ food truck operated – and some more stretched around the corner onto Fowlkes Street for folks’ viewing pleasure.

County transferring funds to make repairs

Recent flooding has put a number of Austin County roads in bad condition, and during last Monday morning’s commissioners court meeting, action was taken to help rectify the problem. On a suggestion from Austin County Judge Tim Lapham, the commissioners unanimously voted to transfer $1 million from the General Fund and place it in FM and Lateral to repair damage caused by the May and June flooding.

Special Weather Statement announced

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement just before 7 p.m. regarding severe storms moving west at 20 mph.

“Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 10 miles east of Speaks to Cumings,” the statement says. “Winds in excess of 30 mph will be possible with these storms.”
