The Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) announced award winners for the 2020-2021 school year and two Sealy High School coaches were among the honorees. Danielle Eschenburg was named the cross country sub-varsity coach of the year and Caroline Owen was tabbed as the basketball middle school coach of the year.

Clayton Fritsch, a member of Sealy High School’s Class of 2017 and a redshirt junior at Sam Houston State, took fourth place in the pole vault competition at the NCAA Outdoor National Championship meet in Oregon June 9.

Austin County’s four high schools were well represented at state championships throughout the 2021 calendar year. From powerlifting, to track, to volleyball, to cross country, to football, locals competed against the best of the best this year.

Ed Marcinkiewicz, a former track and field coach at Bellville and Brazos High School and Texas A&M, lost his battle with cancer Friday at the age of 59. Most recently, Marcinkiewicz was part of the broadcast team for BellvilleSports.com where Brahma football and Brahmanette volleyball games are hosted.

The Sealy Tiger track teams hosted the annual Sammy Dierschke Relays at T.J. Mills Stadium and Sealy Junior High School March 11 and came away with both team titles as well as new school records.

The Sealy Tiger basketball squad earned a pair of wins in revenge fashion last week. Sealy bounced back from its season-opening loss in Columbus and beat the Cardinals 45-38 at home last Tuesday before it went on the road and took down Caldwell 66-51 to avenge an overtime loss from Dec. 4.

Before the Sealy Lady Tigers’ non-district game against Cuero last Tuesday, Little Dribblers were recognized on the court at the high school following another successful season. The basketball players came together for a combined breakdown and got the crowd ready for action. COLE McNANNA

The Sealy Lady Tiger basketball squad neared the end of their 2021 slate of games with a 42-34 loss to Cuero in non-district action at home last Tuesday. Sealy was scheduled to host Somerville earlier this week and will travel to a tournament in Weimar Dec.

Bellville’s top running backs made their college commitments official last Wednesday, Dec. 15, when they signed their National Letters of Intent during a ceremony at the high school. Richard Reece, this year’s District 12-4A-D2 Offensive MVP, inked his pledge to Baylor University and Robert Briggs, the district’s Overall MVP, signed on the dotted line to join the Utah State program for next season. When I sat down to start thinking about all that happened this calendar year, I didn’t think much craziness happened. Then I looked through all the photos on my phone and realized there was no shortage of wild events in the 2021 stretch of months.
