Top Bellville running backs make commitments official

Bellville’s top running backs made their college commitments official last Wednesday, Dec. 15, when they signed their National Letters of Intent during a ceremony at the high school. Richard Reece, this year’s District 12-4A-D2 Offensive MVP, inked his pledge to Baylor University and Robert Briggs, the district’s Overall MVP, signed on the dotted line to join the Utah State program for next season. Garcia, Kneip add TGCA honors

Last week in Brazos sports, Esmeralda Garcia added recognitions to her record-breaking junior season on the cross country course and both Cougar basketball teams readied to open district play. In November, Garcia recorded the best finish at the state meet in Brazos history (second place overall with a time of 11:48.9) and recently added an allstate and all-star nod from the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA).

After he qualified for the 2020 National Finals of Rodeo but was sent home following a positive COVID-19 test, Bellville native Caleb Smidt, and his horse Pockets, returned for the 2021 NFR and secured their third World Championship in tie-down roping last weekend in Las Vegas, NV.

Lady Tigers drop pair

The Sealy Lady Tiger basketball squad dropped both of its nondistrict games last week, 66-54 on the road in Gonzales last Tuesday and 47-30 to East Bernard at home last Friday. Sealy entered this week of play with a 5-9 overall record and a lone game earlier in the week Tuesday at home against Cuero who entered with an 11-5 overall record.

RIP, legend Dave Campbell

Dave Campbell, the founder and editor-in-chief of “the bible of Texas football,” the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, passed away last Friday at the age of 96. It didn’t take long for me to be told about the legendary magazine that serves as a must-have for any Texas football fan at the end of the summer leading into the fall seasons.
