DPS reminds Texans to put safety first during Fourth of July holiday

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is stepping up enforcement efforts for the Fourth of July holiday to keep everyone safe on the roads, including Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE), which runs July 3-7.

Operation CARE is a specialized campaign in which Texas Highway Patrol Troopers patrol for drivers who are speeding, intoxicated, not complying with Texas’ Move Over, Slow Down law or violating other laws.

Students in Austin County school districts have participated in more than 700 mental health counseling sessions as part of the state program that provides free telehealth visits through schools across Texas. Sealy ISD Executive Director of Special Programs Mary Gajewski said there is a lack of resources in Austin County and travel and transportation is a challenge for some of the district’s families.

HIDTA investigation results in arrest of Columbus man on drug charges

An ongoing narcotics investigation by the Westside (HIDTA) Narcotics Task Force resulted in the arrest of one suspect. Members of the Austin County Regional Special Response Team (SRT) executed search warrants in Columbus which resulted in the arrest of Eric Belmonte, 39.
