In previous columns I discussed the importance of considering and identifying our community’s placemaking priorities, developing a strategic plan and building short- and long-term work plans to achieve the identified goals.

I grew up in the buckle of the Bible Belt. Although Norman, Oklahoma is home to a large state school (Boomer Sooner!), the area is steeped in religious tradition. As a child, I wasn’t allowed to cuss, curse, swear or otherwise utter profanity. For that reason, I collected bad words like baseball cards. I’d privately trade them with friends at recess but wouldn’t dare say them aloud in front of family or grownups.

Can we all have the courage to admit that being busy is not a badge of honor? Somehow, that myth has woven its way into the truths of parenting, and it is simply just not true. Yet for some reason, no one wants to admit that.

As we open another school year, I would like to thank the Sealy community for their support of all things Sealy ISD. We are blessed to have a community that cares deeply about the education of its students. I truly believe that great schools and great communities go hand in hand. You simply cannot have one without the other.

Restaurant menus have gone through a rapid evolution over the past few years. Gone are the doorstop-thick novels at places like The Cheesecake Factory; they’ve been replaced with QR codes so we can scroll through appetizers and entrees on our smartphones. Although many paper menus have been replaced with digital devices, ridiculous restaurant terms — or what is known as “restaurantese” — abides. It’s time to unpack some of these nonsensical terms.

I come from a solidly bluecollar background. My dad was a carpenter and my mom was a waitress who eventually completed nursing school when I was in my early teens.

The downtown calendar for Sealy has stayed full with lots of help from the Shops of Downtown Sealy’s help. A couple times a year, the downtown businesses have taken it upon themselves to get together to keep downtown active by putting together monthly events.

Before Herb Collins retired, he owned a pawn shop up in the city. A successful pawn shop. And one of the ways he likes to repay society for his good fortune is to speak to the fifth graders at our local elementary school during Career Week

Do we really need to have an opinion on everything? We are a fired-up people. We have hot takes on everything from health to sports to politics — everything is fair game in our no-holds-barred arena of digitally shielded keyboard warriors.
