In the face of rainstorms and an impending severe thunderstorm, Sealy High School presented 214 diplomas to its students in an accelerated graduation ceremony on Mark A. Chapman Field at T.J. Mills Stadium last Friday night, May 28.

At May’s regular meeting of the Sealy ISD Board of Trustees in the junior high cafeteria last Wednesday, newly-elected John Sodolak (Place 6) was sworn in alongside Joe Mike Young (re-elected to Place 7) for a two-year term. After a closed session, Ryan Reichardt, Katy Grigar and Kristen Novicke were named as Board President, Vice President and Secretary, respectively, for the next year as nominated by the board.

Monday morning, dozens of people gathered at the Sealy American Legion Post 442 for the Memorial Day program hosted by the Legion and the Auxiliary Unit. Later in the afternoon, retired Colonel and longtime community leader Paul Dronka – who passed away Memorial Day, 2020 – was honored with a ceremony at the Columbus Hall.

The Sealy Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet last Friday, May 21, at the Columbus Hall in Sealy and honored local businesses, chamber members and community volunteers. Sealy High School seniors took to the streets and paraded down Highway 90 last Thursday, May 20, as part of end-of-the-year events leading up to Friday’s graduation ceremony. Vehicles of all shapes, sizes and colors, some decorated and others not, took turns waving to the crowd that lined the street to congratulate them. The rain held off and locals enjoyed a crawfish boil, live music, games and prizes in downtown Sealy at the annual Mudbugs on Main event hosted by the Shops of Downtown Sealy Saturday, May 22. After the originally scheduled event got rained out May 1, Babette LaMoria-Smith, owner of Patches by Smith and Co., said her prayers were answered and the community came out in droves.

Austin County students participated in the Soil and Water Conservation District’s (SWCD) poster and essay contest. The Austin County Farm Bureau is pleased to announce scholarship winners for the Class of 2021. $500 scholarships $500 scholarships are being awarded to Cameron Hein and Rhys Reichardt of Sealy as well as Kyle Peschel, Lee Michalik and Hunter Schumann from Bellville.
