Hurricanes are no laughing matter. Hurricanes are strong storms that can wreak havoc. Strong hurricane winds and rain can cause substantial damage, as can tidal surges that cause flooding to coastal areas.

Hurricanes pose significant challenges. Such challenges are considerably less difficult when business owners and families prepare for hurricane season in advance.

Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. On average, 12 tropical storms, six of which become hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year.

No area is immune to natural disasters or emergencies. When disaster strikes at home, people who live in areas that are accustomed to certain storms often take things in stride. For example, longtime residents of areas where hurricane season can be harsh can draw on years of experience confronting such storms, and that history can make it easier when the next hurricane touches down. But what about when disasters strike while traveling?

Weather emergencies can happen at any time of year and in any part of the world. Learning to recognize the most common weather hazards can help people confront adverse weather situations more capably.

Emergency responders from within Austin County took part in a mass casualty/active shooter training drill at Bellville High School last Thursday morning, June 10. The emergency responders who took part in the training exercise represented a variety of agencies including Austin County EMS, the Bellville Volunteer Fire Department, Sealy ISD Police, the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, the Bellville Police Department, the Bellville Medical Center ER, and the Austin County Special Response Team (which is comprised of specially trained officers from multiple law enforcement agencies within and outside of Austin County).

Sealy FFA members Avery Oliver and Brayden Ashorn were recently awarded scholarships from the Texas FFA. The Texas FFA website says the scholarships were awarded based on academic and FFA achievements as well as the member’s performance in an interview process. Oliver won a $20,000 scholarship sponsored by the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and Ashorn was awarded a $10,000 scholarship sponsored by the Richard Wallrath Education Foundation. After the baseball and softball seasons concluded, eight Brazos High School student-athletes earned all-district honors for their respective seasons in District 24-3A. Five Cougar baseball players and three Cougarette softball players represented their squad with postseason honors.
