It has been four months since Winter Storm Uri crippled Texas. Although my position with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension encourages families and businesses to prepare for disasters, the storm highlighted weaknesses in my own family’s preparedness plan. Since the passing of the storm, I have reflected on ways we could have been better prepared. The utmost need I identified was an improved tool to receive hazardous weather updates.

The Wayne Duddlesten Foundation has awarded the Blinn College Foundation a $100,000 grant to provide scholarships for students seeking trades career training. Wayne Duddlesten, a prominent Houston businessman and philanthropist, established his foundation in 1981 to help non-profit organizations and educational institutions.

July 15, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced its new Calf Scramble event, “Super Scramble,” which will debut Saturday, March 19. The Super Scramble is an extension of one of RODEOHOUSTON®’s fan-favorite events, the Calf Scramble, which is held nightly after the rodeo action.
As the I-10 expansion continues to advance west, the community of Sealy needs to begin to consider the impact that the unprecedented growth will have on the area. How will we improve infrastructure? Will we have enough affordable housing? How will we maintain and attract new businesses and just as important how will we train residents or attract skilled and professional employees into our community?

The Sealy High School Interact Club recently stopped by The Sealy News office to redeem aluminum cans and raised $83.25. Residents can drop their aluminum cans in the black and gold box outside The Sealy News office to benefit the students of the Interact Club.
