District needs VATRE to increase teacher salaries, maximize state funding

Body
Early voting is underway, and Election Day is approaching on Nov. 5. Sealy ISD is asking voters to consider a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) when they head to the polls. School taxes consist of a maintenance and operations (M&O) rate and an interest and sinking (I&S) rate. Maintenance and operations revenue is used for everyday expenses, including salaries, utilities, fuel, buses, repairs, and supplies. Interest and sinking revenue is used to pay off loans for building facilities, similar to a home mortgage. As mentioned in last week’s column, we are asking voters to approve an increase in the M&O rate by $0.03 to a rate of $0.6969. In August, we lowered our I&S tax rate by $0.03 to a rate of $0.3312 to ensure that a VATRE would not increase the overall tax rate.
