Brazos

The 2021 calendar year certainly provided its fair share of ups and downs but for the most part, seemed to get people closer to a sense of normalcy again. In the sports arenas, many Brazos Cougars excelled and represented their school at the regional and state levels and returned home with some hardware and records.

Brazos cross country runners were recently recognized for their efforts in the classroom with spots on academic all-state lists as awarded by the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas (CCCAT).

Last week in Brazos sports, the Cougarette volleyball squad earned another pair of sweeps and moved up to No. 22 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s state poll and the Cougar football team fell to Danbury on the road 33-6.

The Brazos Cougar football squad dropped its second straight contest last Friday and fell to 1-2 on the season after a 42-0 loss to Burton at Cougar Stadium in Wallis. Brazos looks to get back on track against Weimar (0-3) on the road this Friday.

The Brazos Cougar football team secured its first season-opening victory since 2013 with a 23-8 win over Anderson-Shiro last Friday night at Cougar Stadium in Wallis. The Brazos defense limited the Owls’ offense by forcing a pair of fumbles and registering a safety.

The Brazos Cougarette volleyball squad competed in the Schulenburg Tournament last weekend and came away with a 7-1 record and second-place finish. Senior Meagan Demny and junior Haiven Harris-Alvarado were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. Brazos was set to face Bellville earlier this week before it competes in the Anderson-Shiro Tournament this weekend to wrap up tournament play. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

The Brazos Cougar cross country team competed in the Frio Friday Night Lights Cross Country Meet last Friday in Sealy. Individually in the varsity girls’ division, Esmeralda Garcia was third, Denise Hauer finished sixth and Rubi Garcia placed 28th.

Before the Brazos Cougar football team took the field at Cougar Stadium and started hitting at the crack of midnight, the squad unveiled new uniforms during a Media Day event at Brazos High School Friday, Aug. 6.
