The election of the Speaker of the House is normally a formality for the ruling majority but this year, the election turned into a bit of a spectacle. Congressman Michael McCaul, the representative for the 10th district including Austin County, said the House “was being held hostage until we get this thing resolved.” Kevin McCarthy was elected as Speaker of the House after 14 unsuccessful attempts but on that 15th attempt, McCarthy was finally able to sway enough votes his way and take over the position.
