The Bellville Brahmanette basketball team competed in the Weimar tournament last week and earned a 3-3 record where they won the consolation bracket with a 40-37 win over Schulenburg. Senior Neelie Schiel was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

Ed Marcinkiewicz, a former track and field coach at Bellville and Brazos High School and Texas A&M, lost his battle with cancer Friday at the age of 59. Most recently, Marcinkiewicz was part of the broadcast team for BellvilleSports.com where Brahma football and Brahmanette volleyball games are hosted.

Austin County’s four high schools were well represented at state championships throughout the 2021 calendar year. From powerlifting, to track, to volleyball, to cross country, to football, locals competed against the best of the best this year.

For the most part, the 2021 sports seasons were a refreshing change from the year prior where cancellations and postponements flooded the schedules at the onset of the pandemic. Although things are still not where they were pre-pandemic, this past year of Austin County’s high school sports seemed to start giving everyone a sense of normalcy again.

The Blinn College volleyball team registered eighth place in its second consecutive appearance in the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, KS. The Blinn College men’s and women’s golf teams are each ranked 14th in the latest NJCAA Division I rankings. The Blinn men are 14th out of 20, while the women are 14th out of 27.

Five members of the Bellville Brahma football team were bestowed with academic all-state honors from the Texas High School Coaches Association and Army National Guard. The lists were broken up into first-team, second-team and honorable mentions for studentathletes who maintained an overall GPA of 92 or above in courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed in grade 12.
