State law exempts sales tax on qualified items — such as clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks — priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. The date of the sales tax holiday and list of tax-exempt items are set by the Texas Legislature.

Vrablec resigns from council, hired as City Planner

Sealy City Councilmember Place 3/Mayor Pro Tem Sandra Vrablec stepped down from her council seat to accept the position of City of Sealy Planner at the council’s Aug. 3 regular meeting at the W. E. Hill Community Center.

Vrablec will no longer participate in council meetings and her seat will remain open until the November election.

Neglected animals rescued from Sealy property

July 28, the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescued 22 dogs and four cats from a property on the west side of Sealy.

“It was one of the worst cases of deplorable living conditions Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators said they have seen in their many years of field experience in animal welfare,” a Wednesday press release said.

The Wallis Chamber of Commerce’s Big Barn Bash dinner and dance is set for Saturday, August 7, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Wallis Columbus Hall on 703 Columbus Road. Dress is casual, there will be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction while The Magnetic Eels Sancho Villa provide classic rock and pop rock tunes.
