Texas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in 67 counties who were affected by the severe winter weather in February will have additional time to report their food loss because of power outages due to the storm.

The Lower Colorado River Authority on Tuesday announced it will build a new peaker power plant in Central Texas to provide an additional 190 megawatts of dispatchable power to the Texas power grid.
 
The plant is expected to be operational in 2025. A peaker plant is one that typically is used for brief periods during times when the demand for power approaches or surpasses the amount of power available.

Seeking Justice Organization is hosting a town hall meeting to address the unequal justice toward certain people.

“The point of the meeting is to address that everyone deserves quality justice for all in the Austin County justice system,” said Rev. J.R. Johnson.

The meeting is set for Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Sens Activity Center in Bellville.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing more than $345.9 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of February as the final extension of benefits.

Thanks to a proactive board of directors, the Gordon Memorial Library has revamped its services to better serve the needs of this community.

Chairman of the Gordon Memorial Library Board Terry Arnold said, “we have revamped every single thing at the library.”

Arnold moved to the Sealy area in 2020 and being a new resident started to utilize the library

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the family of Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, 10-year-old that has been diagnosed with terminal brain and spine cancer, contacted the Austin County Sheriff’s Office requesting his swearing in as an honorary deputy with the agency.

Austin County is under a winter weather advisory until noon Wednesday.

Residents can expect freezing rain, ice accumulations around or less than one-eighth of an inch.

The counties effected include Walker, Grimes, Colorado, Austin and Waller counties.
