The Sealy Tiger boys’ basketball team dropped their first two district contests last week, on the road in Wharton 53-32 and at home against Navasota 66-62, and have two road games this week at El Campo and Royal.

The Sealy Lady Tigers will open play within District 20-4A Friday evening with a road trip to Hempstead following a 2-2 record through non-district play. After Sealy snapped a fiveyear, 10-game losing streak to Needville earlier last week, the Lady Tigers closed their non-district slate with an 8-0 loss to La Grange last Friday on the road.

On Jan. 14, the Western Athletic Conference announced that membership invitations issued by the conference’s Board of Directors to five universities have been accepted. Four of the colleges are based in Texas and are leaving the Southland Conference as of July 1.

Thanks to an insurance goal from freshman Rebeca Garza with 19 minutes left to play, the Sealy Lady Tigers secured a 2-1 win over the Needville Lady Jays Monday night at T.J. Mills Stadium. Sealy’s win snapped a five-year, 10-game losing streak against Needville, a former district foe.

For the first time in nearly nine years, the Sealy Tiger boys’ basketball squad eclipsed the century mark in a game and took a 109- 14 decision over the Brazosport Christian Eagles at home last Saturday afternoon. Sealy improved to 6-3 with the win while Brazosport Christian fell to 1-11.

In the first district meeting between Austin County rivals this season last Friday night, junior Neelie Schiel provided the game-winning layup with 8.8 seconds remaining in the game to lift the host Bellville Brahmanettes over the Sealy Lady Tigers, 50-48.
