The first known case of a new and more contagious coronavirus strain has been reported in Texas, in an adult male resident of Harris County who had no history of travel, according to the state health services department and County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

Jamie Speck sees art everywhere. A part-time art instructor for the Blinn College District since 2002, Speck turned everyday items like dryer sheets, beeswax, and can lids into pieces of art that are now on display in a prestigious Corpus Christi gallery.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hanzelka Jr. of Orchard announce the engagement of their daughter, Breanna Alexis Hanzelka, to Allan James Kovar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Kovar of Wallis. The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond (Lefty) Hanzelka of Wallis and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Sowa of Sealy. She is a graduate of Brazos High School and the University of Houston and is continuing her post-graduate education at Texas Women’s University in Houston with a career in Occupational Therapy. The prospective groom is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kovar of Wallis and the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Haedge Sr. of East Bernard. He is a graduate of Brazos High School and the University of Texas in Austin and is employed with Leedo Cabinetry in East Bernard. The couple plans to exchange vows at 2:00 p.m. on May 15 at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis.

On Jan. 5, COVID-19 patients accounted for more than 15% of hospitals’ capacity for over a week in the Trauma Service Area that includes Austin, Colorado and Waller Counties.

At the executive session of Sealy City Council’s Jan. 5 meeting, the council rejected the separation proposal from City Manager Lloyd Merrell, who resigned from his position then was placed on paid administrative leave on Dec. 14.

To begin the new year, Austin County officials were sworn into office in a special meeting of commissioners court on Jan. 1.
