Active cases on the rise

Entering this week, the Department of State Health Services had record of 191 active cases of COVID-19 in Austin County, a 39-case increase from the previous week. Three more fatalities were also added to the totals and as of Monday, there had been 44 COVID-related deaths in Austin County.

Monday, Sealy ISD announced it will be closing schools Thursday and Friday this week after a spike in cases was seen over the weekend.

Although the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) had record of nine fewer active cases of COVID-19 to start this week in Austin County compared to the previous week, two more fatalities were reported to bring the total to 41.

Monday, there were an estimated 152 active cases according to DSHS and since the pandemic began, there are 2,249 total confirmed cases and an estimated 2,561 cases have been declared recovered.

The Department of State Health Services has reported positive trends in the COVID-19 pandemic since the calendar year switched to 2021. DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES  

Vaccine rates increasing

As of Monday evening, Austin County Judge Tim Lapham said that nearly half of county residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 21.76% are considered fully vaccinated. In his weekly Facebook update, Lapham said 46.25% of residents had received the initial shot.

As of Monday afternoon, 2,781 Austin County residents had already received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine according to County Judge Tim Lapham. The same afternoon, active cases sat at 114 – 20 more than that time last week – and fatalities remained at 26 according to the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
