The Sealy Tiger team tennis squad had two representatives advance from last week’s District 24-4A Championships to the regional tournament.

Carlos Godoy registered a runner-up finish in the boys’ singles bracket and Cameron Eschenburg and Norman Juarez similarly finished second in the boys’ doubles circuit to punch a ticket to the Region III Championship in Bryan April 26 and 27.

Godoy started his district tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Navasota’s Miguel Alvarado then beat Wharton’s Blaine Zulauf by 6-3, 6-2 scores to set up a championship bout with Bellville’s Matthew DeCarvalho. In the finals, DeCarvalho secured set scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to claim the boys’ singles title.

Sealy’s Eric Wilson also competed in the boys’ singles circuit and earned wins over Navasota’s Victor Torres (6-3, 6-1) and El Campo’s Owen Lyford (6-0, 6-0) but fell to DeCarvalho in the semifinals. Wilson met with Zulauf from Wharton in the third-place match but fell by 6-4, 6-1 set scores.

In the boys’ doubles bracket, Eschenburg/ Juarez earned wins over Bellville’s Chase Kourik/Stewart Poffenberger (6-1, 6-1) and Wharton’s Sam Maffet/ Jasis White (6-2, 6-3) to set up a championship match with Bellville’s Lane Lischka/Carson Lewis pair. In the finals, it was the Brahmas that won the marathon and ultimately the championship with set scores of 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 although the Sealy pairing also qualified for regionals.

Hayden Havel/Jacob Gajewski also represented the Tigers in the boys’ doubles competition but fell to the Lischka/Lewis pair from Bellville in the first round by set scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Lady Tigers Alexis Horelica and Rebecca Kins both competed in the girls’ singles bracket but both fell in the opening round. Horelica fell to El Campo’s Kayleigh Gardner 6-0, 6-4 and Kins fell to Bellville’s Kirby Marik 6-1, 6-0. Gardner and Marik met in the third-place match where Marik won 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Sealy had no representatives in the girls’ doubles bracket but Seth Pine/Abigail Zientek and Connor Vesely/Trinity Harding competed in the mixed doubles circuit where the former pair earned a first-round win. Pine/Zientek took down Eli Lyford/Haley Tupa from El Campo by 6-2, 6-2 sets but fell to Wharton’s Kaden Gusman/Alondra Gomez pairing 6-1, 6-0 in the second round.
