The Sealy Lady Tiger softball team opened its scrimmage season last Tuesday at home against Caldwell.

Although she noticed some rust on her players, Head Coach Brittney Whitehead said the Lady Tigers learned plenty from the scrimmage.

“We talked about how our defense needs to be cleaned up. We need to do a better job communicating with each other and we’re gonna work on some stuff. Most of what we got to see on defense was balls in the gap,” the head coach said. “I think (offensively) they were just a little nervous because that was the first time they’ve seen live pitching in a while. So, hopefully, with these next scrimmages and seeing more live pitching, our offense will come around.”

Still, Antreece Coleman, Colette Kelley and Taylor Cash were all listed as highlights who hit the ball hard opposite freshman Amorin Hofford who stepped into the pitcher’s circle for Sealy.

“I saw some good things from her, she had some good pitches. She was hitting her spots so for a freshman, she’s got some potential and she’s really going to help our program in the future,” Whitehead said of Hofford. “Antreece found a way on, she hit the ball into left field and got on in the second inning. Colette got a base hit, it wasn’t necessarily the hit she wanted, but any hit’s a hit. Then Taylor Cash ripped a ball in the middle but unfortunately the centerfielder got under it and caught it, but it was a nice shot. So those three hit the ball hard and that was at the top of the lineup.”

The Lady Tigers’ scrimmage last Friday in East Bernard got canceled due to weather but Sealy was scheduled to travel to Altair to face Rice earlier this week before hosting Bay City Friday for the final preseason battle. The regular season is set to start next Tuesday at home against Hallettsville.
