The Sealy Lady Tiger soccer squad won its district-opening contest in convincing fashion by a 10-0 score over the Hempstead Bobcats behind four goals from freshman Rebeca Garza.

Sealy traveled to Hempstead last Friday evening to open play within District 20-4A and got a strong defensive effort from senior goalkeeper Hailey Arteaga to supplement the scoring efforts.

Seniors Coral Becerra and Valerie Villagomez each recorded a pair of goals and classmates Daniel Acosta and Destinee Castillo each scored singular goals for the Lady Tigers’ largest margin of victory this season. Becerra also registered three assists, and Garza, Acosta and Castillo, as well as freshman Julieta Villagomez, all contributed one assist.

Sealy entered this week with a 3-2 overall record and the 1-0 mark in district play. Earlier in the week, the Lady Tigers traveled to Altair to take on the Rice Raiders before hosting the Harmony School of Discovery Tigers this Friday for their first home district contest at T.J. Mills Stadium.

Head girls’ soccer coach Adrian Rocha said if the squad can get going on the right foot early, he hoped that would build momentum going into the rest of the district slate.

“If we have a good start to district, hopefully we can keep it on a roll,” Rocha said Jan. 11 following the non-district finale.
