The Brazos powerlifting teams traveled to Altair and Rice High School to open the 2021 season last Wednesday, Jan. 13, and had four individuals win their weight class.

Caitlyn Snedaker (114), Bryan Maldonado (114), Joey Townsend (165) and Halie Gonzales (181) all lifted the most combined weight for their group between squat, bench press and deadlift exercises.

The Cougarettes took second in the team competition with two second-place finishers, three thirdplace finishers and a fourth-place finisher which helped compile 35 team points.

On the other side, the Cougars had only one each finish in second and third and had two fourth-place finishers for 26 team points to register third place by only three points behind Rice.

The Brazos lifters will take two more trips to Altair this month for competition before hosting a meet on Feb. 3.

Last season, Gonzales represented the Cougarettes at the regional championship but finished seventh overall and just missed out on advancing to state. The boys’ regional competition was canceled at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and four Cougars (Joseph Townsend, Bryan Maldonado, Brandon Maldonado and Hayden Pearson) were unable to finish their campaign.

This season, the girls’ regional championship is set for March 5 and 6 with the boys’ competition scheduled for March 12 and 13.
