When this column comes out, I will be on a trip with my husband to celebrate our upcoming 10th wedding anniversary. We had to take the trip early because who in their right mind would sign up to handle our household without us? We knew no one was crazy enough for that so we booked our trip for when our littles were away at camp and hired a house warden to make sure our bigs don’t cause an explosion or rack up hundreds of dollars in charges at Dominoes.

July 7, 2021, Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation identifying 11 agenda items to be addressed in a Special Session beginning Thursday, July 8, 2021. The items include bail reform, election integrity, border security, social media censorship, Article X funding, family violence prevention, fair competition in UIL sports, safety measures on abortion-inducing drugs, 13th check for retired teachers, banning Critical Race Theory from being taught in our schools, funding measures to provide property-tax relief, better protections for our foster-care systems and enhanced safeguards to potential cybersecurity threats.

We all know the difference between a “whole” and a “hole.” Entire doughnuts and bagels have both! For most things, if they get a hole, they’re not whole. This happens to me all the time with my socks (darn it!). I’ve always thought that “whole” milk must feel superior to other milks. It’s got to be looking down its nose at the other milks: I’m the best there is — I’m whole.

“I don’t have to. I get to.” A teenager said that to me yesterday in response to my statement that she did not have to take her own time and money to do a kind thing for me.

We are very excited to announce that our Board is up and making things happen. We would like to introduce you to your Sealy Main Street Advisory Board! Our board president, Christina Luffman, began with the board last year and has been full steam ahead since the day she started with the board.

I’m a proud “word nerd.” I love words; I collect them like baseball cards. I like weird words, wonky words, witty words and even a handful of Welsh words (fun fact: the word for “carrot” in Welsh is “moron”). As a person prone to collecting things, I hoard words like a doomsday prepper stashes toilet paper. Is it an illness? Probably. But it’s cheaper than golf.

Friday, July 16 was a momentous day in my life. I wrote my first newspaper column, and I successfully grew my first tomato in Texas soil. Truthfully had I ever been asked the odds of either one of those things, I would have given greater odds to the former rather than the latter. One would think the opposite would be true, wouldn’t you? Let me give you a little background …

As the I-10 expansion continues to advance west, the community of Sealy needs to begin to consider the impact that the unprecedented growth will have on the area. How will we improve infrastructure? Will we have enough affordable housing? How will we maintain and attract new businesses and just as important how will we train residents or attract skilled and professional employees into our community?

I’m not sure when a house becomes a home, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet. My husband, Peter, and I have moved into the new place.

As you know in your own daily lives, each day brings a new challenge of some sort. Public safety in our neighborhoods, streets, and just general peaceful living is what each of us wants and what the City of Sealy strives to provide.
