A walk down memory lane

One night a couple weeks ago I got a random Facebook video call from my second-grade teacher.

Honestly, at first, I was unsure if it was a scam or what was going on so I ignored it. About ten minutes later, a Massachusetts number called my phone and I picked up.

It was indeed Mrs. Shaw, who I had for second grade, my brother had for fourth grade and whose family we have stayed in touch with over the years.

She had called to tell me that she watches a program every week that has a guy on it that resembles me and wanted to let me know how excited she is to watch “me” on TV every week but also enjoys seeing my Facebook posts about what’s going on here in Sealy. She went on to say how proud they were of both my brother and me for what we’ve gone on to become and that we’re still in their thoughts.

It was a very nice moment and I had reciprocating feelings because I do truly think about her along with all of my favorite teachers from throughout the years. It also felt timely because of a Letter to the Editor we ran just a few weeks back around the holidays.

A former teacher was saying how her Christmas decorations are still the ornaments her students made for her years ago and each time she decorates she gets to take a trip down memory lane and visit all of her former students.

Even Mrs. Shaw said she holds her teaching memories so dearly and that the memories we all create are with us always – in bad times and in good times – so they’re always worth holding onto.

Although unexpected, the conversation warmed my heart and I was very appreciative to take a quick walk down my memory lane and it felt as though I was really just there although it probably helped I had just been home the week prior for the holidays as well.

I had also recently heard a song that said something to the effect that memory lane is basically a place where time stands still and you can visit at any time and relive the moment and that’s how I envisioned that conversation as well.

I was sure to relay the message to my family as well and I’m sure they all took a walk down their memory lanes as well so I’d encourage everyone, as we enter the new year, to take some more time in their strolls down memory lane when time allows.

Whenever life gets too crazy, always remember that road is intact the way you left it the last time.
