Message from Mayor Bilski
As any family knows, managing a household budget is challenging.
This challenge is even greater when preparing the city budget while serving as the voice of the taxpayers of the City of Sealy. For many years, the city taxpayers have been funding events and activities that benefit the larger community and region.
Recent efforts have been made by City Manager Hill and the City Council to establish fees for the use of city facilities bringing them in agreement with sound business practices.
Whether it is providing staff on weekends at overtime rates for community events or recovering the real cost of renting various city facilities, the revenue charged in the past has not recovered the cost of operations and maintenance. Many times, those using facilities are actually receiving fundraising revenue.
Work has begun with staff, nonprofits, and various other organizations as well as individuals to develop a fair fee which is critical to the financial health of the City. Increases on rental facilities to recover actual costs for cleaning, electricity and supplies have been implemented.
This includes the events many look forward to such as Fantasy of Lights, Sealybration and other various events.
Recent discussions with the officers of the Sealy Little League have resulted in agreements that will be of mutual benefit to all with positive solutions that enhance the recreational opportunities at the BPW/Chapman Ballpark fields.
The generous donation from the Chapman Foundation working with the Sealy Little League has created a tremendous asset for the community and draws in thousands of visitors to Sealy.
The tournament visitors contribute to the sales tax and hotel occupancy tax revenue. The restroom condition, field maintenance and grounds are well maintained by city staff for the positive image citizens expect.
I have received many positive comments of encouragement for the work toward restoring the City’s financial health.
