Kathleeen JoAnn Tullis McDowell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at home June 13, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on May 1, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa, Kathleen’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter and an unwavering dedication to her family Kathleen was a proud graduate of North High School in Des Moines, having completed her education in 1970. She became a Licensed Cosmetologist following her passion for beauty and hair care.
In the autumn of 1971, Kathleeen married Matthew Dean McDowell, on Oct. 16 in a ceremony that marked the beginning of a partnership that would last for more than five decades. Together, they built a stable family life, raising two daughter who were the light of their lives: Jennifer Lynn McDowell Ricard and Emily Kay McDowell.
Kathleen was characterized by her loving and social nature. She had an incredible gift for making others feel welcome and her home was always a gathering place for family and friends. Her passions were as diverse as her interests – she delighted in cooking and baking, often filling her kitchen with the delightful aromas of homemade treats.
Her love for decorating and gardening transformed her home into a vibrant sanctuary, while her affection for cats brought joy and companionship into her life. Kathleen also enjoyed spending leisurely days by the pool and beach, where she created cherished memories with her family.
Kathy’s legacy lives on through her husband, Matthew McDowell; her two daughters, her cherished granddaughters, Rachel Grace Ricard and Crystal Lynn Ricard, her grandson Zachary Thomas McDowell, and her great-grandson, Theodore Lee Grandholm. Each of them carries a piece of her spirit, reflecting her love and nurturing nature.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Marion Tullis, her month, Patricia Louise Burch and her brother, Michael Tullis. She is survived by her husband Matthew, who stood by her side through every chapter of her life and her daughters, who continue to honor her memory and values.
