JAMES“BUBBA”DUKE

James “Bubba” Duke, 86, passed away peacefully in Katy on May 12, 2026. He was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Nacogdoches.

Bubba was a hardworking man who dedicated much of his life to serving others. He worked as a master plumber for 29 years and was a proud member of the plumbers union. He also faithfully served the citizens of Austin County as county commissioner for 16 years. In addition, he earned his real estate license and was well known throughout the community for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others.

Bubba never met a stranger. He was generous, caring and always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved telling jokes and making people laugh, and his sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him. He enjoyed fishing on the river, raising cattle, drinking coffee and spending time visiting with friends. He could often be found at the local gas station, Little B’s, sharing stories and conversation.

More than anything, Bubba loved his family and treasured every moment with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Curtis Duke and Mary Kostal Duke; his son, Jeffrey Duke; and his siblings, Della Maler, Betty Jane Lucas, Margie Duke and Sonny Duke.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Jez Duke; his daughter, Terri Pacher and husband David Pacher; grandson Ryan Pacher and wife Christin Pacher, and great-granddaughter Grace; granddaughter Hailey Pacher Stein and husband Braxton Stein; stepdaughter Kim Jez Bing and husband Kevin Bing, grandson Karder Bing and wife Avery Bing and great-granddaughter Hazel, granddaughter Kenna Bing Hickey and husband Clayte Hickey and great-grandson Kolter, and grandson Kade Bing; stepsons Jason Jez and wife Sandy Jez, and Sean Jez and wife Beth Jez; grandson Zachary Jez; grandson Zander Jez and wife Samantha Jez; and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Bubba’s legacy of kindness, laughter, hard work, and love for his family and community will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
