Helen Marie McCarter Johnston was born on May 22, 1930 in Newport, Tennessee to Ruby and Forrest McCarter. The family relocated to Galena Park Texas after the death of Forrest and Ruby married E.H. Levy. Helen became the proud big sister of Kathy and Jimmy Levy who she adored and remained dose with all her life. She attended Galena Park High School where she was active in band, acapella choir, volleyball, junior stunt night, and the H.E. play.

It was there that she met the love of her life, Floyd W. Johnston, Jr. They were married on June 23, 1951 at Galena Park First Baptist Church. Shortly after their wedding Floyd enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Germany. The two sent many love letters back and forth until his return. They settled for a short time in San Antonio before moving to Houston where they started their family. Helen was a beloved mother to Randall, Glenda, Andy, and Lisa.

She was a loyal Exxon employee for 17 years. She then spent her time enjoying her favorite role: being Memaw to her 6 treasured grandchildren.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sealy for over 30 years where she was an elder. She opened the church every Sunday and could be found behind the scenes helping to prepare communion and anything else needed. There were few things she loved more than singing to her Lord and Savior in the choir.

Helen enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, reading, eating Whataburger, traveling with her family, and watching Houston sports, especially her boys, the Rockets, but above all, her favorite thing was anytime her family was together. She leaves a legacy of faithfully following Christ, being kind and welcoming to all, and selflessly serving others. She will be missed daily by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service was held on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Sealy. The family welcomed friends from noon to 2 p.m. Interment followed the funeral service at Sealy Cemetery.
