The Brazos Independent School District Board of Trustees met June 14 to discuss a revised proposal request regarding the weight room and concession stand construction project. President Myles Marek called the meeting to order at 6 p.m., members present were Brian Demny, Tiffani Shirley, Dale Divin, and Justin Richardson via zoom. Tammy McCain was absent.

“I can’t thank you all enough for revisiting this topic” said Brazos Athletic Booster Club President Chris Young when giving his public comment to the board. “All but one member has agreed to a $5,000 donation toward the weight room, and it could possibly be more,” he later added.

For starters, the board expressed that a decision needed to be made but more importantly action needed to follow. In attendance were SZH Architect Wade Zimmer and Vice-President of Portfolio Builders Christian Frisch to answer questions from the board as well as express sentiments on the usage of the funds for specific portions of the project.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Brian Demny moved with a second by Matt Demny to approve the agreement with Portfolio Builders, Inc. for their bid in substantially the same form as presented, and to authorize the Superintendent Scott Rogers to execute the contract.

The motion failed with Dale Divin, Tiffani Shirley, and Myles Marek voting against. After a lengthy discussion, Brian Demny moved with a second by Justin Richardson to accept the bid of $2,055,000 from Portfolio Builders and reject all value engineering items, except for $140,000 insulated panel roof, and with a $50,000 reduction of contingency, for a total amount of $1,865, 000, and to authorize the superintendent to execute the contract. The motion passed five to one, with Dale Divin voting against.

Brazos ISD board members were relieved the discussion had finally come to a close and that improvements in the community will take place soon. Once the project begins, there are some minor changes that could take place but essentially, a brand-new weight room facility and concession stand will be a reality.
