TxDOT offers driving tips as icy weather approaches
When winter weather is approaching, the Texas Department of Transportation will treat some major roadways and fixed structures with brine.
Tuesday, Feb. 1, TxDOT crews started treating areas and monitoring the areas already treated with brine, a mixture of water and sodium chloride.
It is very important to know that although areas are being treated with brine, this does NOT prevent ice from forming on the roads or bridges. Drivers still have to use caution when driving – even if the area looks to have been treated. TxDOT crews will go into 24-hour operations monitoring the roads as long as it is safe to do so.
TxDOT is urging drivers to not get out in this winter weather and avoid driving as much as possible. If you have to get out on the roadways, however, here are a few tips:
- Keep your windows clear so that you can see all around you.
- Do NOT use cruise control.
- Allow yourself extra time to get to your destination and do not be in a rush.
- Keep a safe traveling distance between you and the car in front of you.
- No distracted driving. Stay aware of your surroundings and be prepared to stop and slow down on short notice.
- Check your tire pressure and make sure you have fully operating windshield wipers.
- When traveling a long distance, make sure to have an emergency kit and extra supplies such as food, water, medications, and blankets, just in case you get caught in traffic or have to be in your car longer than expected.
Road conditions can change very quickly so be prepared if you have to be on the roadways. Make sure to check your local weather stations and visit drivetexas.org for road conditions.
