Columbus Police Department confirmed Wednesday night that the pursuit that completely shut down Interstate 10 Eastbound Tuesday night ended in a fatality.

Alan Quan Tea Steward, 39, was stopped by CPD on Highway 90 in Columbus and evaded apprehension into Austin County where spikes were deployed and the crashed car “ignited into flames,” near Exit 723 in San Felipe.

“During the traffic stop Columbus Police Department learned that Steward was wanted by Pardons and Parole for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Steward evaded apprehension in the vehicle he was driving, leading Columbus Police Department in a pursuit of approximately 30 miles,” CPD said Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. “Spikes were deployed on IH-10 in Austin County. Steward crashed the vehicle he was driving and the vehicle ignited into flames as a result of the crash. Steward was confirmed deceased by an Austin County Justice of the Peace. Steward’s next of kin has been notified of his death. The incident remains under investigation.”

Department of Public Safety Sergeant Stephen Woodard said Wednesday morning DPS representatives assisted with a vehicle fire from a Colorado County pursuit Tuesday night.

San Felipe Police Department announced at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday the highway was closed due to an investigation. On the scene during the stoppage were representatives from the Colorado and Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, Columbus, Sealy and San Felipe Police among other first responders.

The main-lane backup stretched for miles through Sealy and drivers reported they remained parked until 1 a.m. Wednesday. Traffic on the frontage road was opened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
