Six Cougarette powerlifters state bound

Last week in Brazos sports, six Cougarettes qualified for the state powerlifting championship and the track teams hosted the Cougar Relays.

At the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s Region 2 Division 3 Championship in Dublin March 3, Brazos’ Jemma Zahradnik (114-pound class), Jessica Ramos (148), Joanna Ramos (181), Tiona Steward (220) and Marlena Nunn (259+) all punched their ticket to the state championship as the third representative from their respective weight classes. The Division 3 Championship is set for March 17 in Corpus Christi.

Also last Thursday, the Cougar Relays were hosted at Brazos High School with Boling, East Bernard, Ganado, Hempstead, Hitchcock, Louise, Rice and Van Vleck also competing on the track and field. The Cougarettes finished as the fourth-place team and the Cougars took eighth from the team competition.

Haiven Harris (100m dash) and Esmeralda Garcia (800m run, 1600m run, 3200m run) both won events for the Cougarettes and were supplemented by fourth-place finishes from Rubi Garcia (1600m, 3200m runs), Sylvia Lopez (triple jump) and Jimena Romero (discus).

Rees Snedaker (3200m run), Hayden Vykukal (shot put) and Kasey Zientek (discus) all registered fourthplace finishes for the Cougars. Nicholas Holub (3200m run) and Vykukal (discus) complemented the efforts and finished fifth in their events.
