Bellville’s newest Chief of Police, Jason Smalley, was sworn in by City Attorney Charlie Smith March 31 in the council chambers. Smalley took over for Larry Matthews who had been the Bellville Chief since 2003 and had over 46 years of experience.

Smalley was joined by his wife Jenni and sons Caleb and Colt in celebrating his promotion from Lieutenant, where he had served since 2008. Smalley is a member of Bellville High School’s Class of 1992 and owns 21 years of experience between Harris County and Austin County Sheriff’s Offices in addition to BPD.

Fellow Bellville High School alumni Ray Roberson and Kevin Bellville were also promoted in the wake of Matthews’ retirement. Roberson was elevated from Investigator to Lieutenant over investigations and patrol and Bellville was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant over patrol and both have served BPD for 12 years.
