The Highway 36 eastbound entrance onto Interstate 10 will be closed for approximately two months starting Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. while crews work to construct a permanent entrance ramp.

While the Highway 36 entrance ramp is closed, traffic heading east on I-10 will be detoured onto the westbound frontage road through the intersection at Rexville Road and ultimately U-turn onto the eastbound frontage road before merging onto the interstate, according to Project Engineer Jason Cope in an email to Sealy officials and staff Tuesday, Feb. 15.

The project will begin two days before the eastbound entrance ramp closes where westbound traffic will adopt newly completed lanes, according to Cope.

“The first phase will shift the westbound (WB) traffic to the new WB main lanes BNSF and SH 36 overpasses, starting Tuesday (Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.),” read Cope’s email. “We will have message boards and detour signage displayed providing guidance.”

Sealy Mayor Carolyn Bilski foreshadowed traffic frustration during the regular city council meeting held Tuesday, Feb. 15 at the W. E. Hill Community Center.

“We begged them to hold off until after Christmas as people went into Houston shopping, it’s time for that to take place,” said Bilski. “It’s going to be a mess right there at 36. You can either go back to (FM) 3538 or you can go westbound and make a (U-turn) and come back. … This is going to be a huge change.”
