In April, Child Protective Services (CPS) is joining with local governments, community groups, service organizations, and other partners to put the spotlight on preventing, recognizing, and reporting child abuse.

Last year in Texas, CPS investigated nearly 185,000 allegations of child abuse or neglect. 68,461 children and teens were victims of abuse or neglect and 251 children died at the hands of a parent or other caregivers. Locally in Austin County, 47 children were victims of abuse and neglect, 1 child died due to abuse and neglect and 18 children were in the care of the Department of Family and Protective Services.

At the regular meeting of Austin County Commissioners Court Monday, April 12, a proclamation was read by Judge Tim Lapham that honored April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and recognized CASA for Kids of South Central Texas.

The month of April is dedicated to recognizing that the safety and wellbeing of children in Texas must be a priority as well as honoring friends, neighbors, educators, faith leaders, business owners, health care workers, counselors, and many others who help promote the well-being of children.
