Cougar trio PRs at state
Townsend, Zientek medal at final powerlifting meet of season
All three Brazos Cougar representatives at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Division 3 State Championship registered personal-record totals to close the season.
Joey Townsend (4th place – 165-pound class) and Kasey Zientek (5th place – 220-pound class) both returned with medals with totals that surpassed 1,000 pounds. Bryan Maldonado was not far behind and registered ninth place in the 123- pound weight class.
Maldonado tied his previous personal-record total set at Brazos’ host meet Feb. 23, Townsend increased by 20 pounds on his previous best mark set recently at the Region 4 Championship March 11 and Zientek finished with a 95-pound improvement on his previous record, also set at the Cougars’ Last Chance Meet in February.
From the first results of the season, Maldonado added 55 pounds to his squat, 15 pounds on his bench press and 45 pounds on his deadlift. Townsend registered jumps of 75, 20 and 60 pounds on his respective lifts and Zientek improved by 65, 60 and 100 pounds on each of his lifts compared to the start of the season.
