Kathryn Margaret Briggs Sweet, 92, daughter of Harold D. and Margaret Lenz Briggs, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2022, with her children beside her.

She was born on October 1, 1929, in Scotia, New York, the fifth of eight children. In 1947, she graduated from Johnstown High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. In the 1940’s, she was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, and many times was called to play Taps for the members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives during World War II and were buried with full military honors in the local cemeteries.

On May 9, 1949, she married Yeoman 3rd Class Arch L. Sweet, also of Johnstown, N.Y., the son of Clarence C. and Blanche M. Sweet. They moved many times due to his work in retail automotive, starting in Canandaigua, NY; Denver, Colorado; Schenectady, NY; Loudonville, NY; Detroit, Michigan; Buffalo, NY; and Houston, Texas. They finally chose Sealy, TX in 1988 for their retirement.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arch L. Sweet, and daughter, Joanne Kathryn Sweet Brown. Also, her parents Harold C. and Margaret L. Briggs; her husband’s parents Clarence C. and Blanche M. Sweet; her siblings James Briggs, Richard Briggs, Harold Lenz Briggs, Clark D. Briggs and wife Joan, Ruth Briggs White and husband Edward, Frederick R. Briggs (husband of Claire), Bernita Sweet Petraska and husband Andrew, Theresa Zikla Sweet (wife of Clarence C. Sweet, Jr.), and Sherry Lynn Moir (wife of David A. Sweet).

She is survived by her son, David Alan Sweet and wife, Sarah Ward Bell; daughter Mary Ann Sweet; brother Paul L. Briggs and wife Heidi of Canada; Claire Briggs (wife of Frederick R. Briggs); Clarence C. Sweet, Jr.; and David’s stepchildren Dean Daggett and family; and Derek Daggett; as well as many other nieces and nephews, mostly from upstate New York.

She also researched the Briggs Family Tree through Ancestry.com, dating them back to the 1700’s, and continued researching for more information.

While in her 80’s, she joined a group called Curves where she worked out, exercising to keep active. She made many friends and had fun while working out. Curves disbanded but the ladies still keep in touch.

In spite of her limitations due to arthritis and other age-related illnesses, she managed to maintain her independence, with outside help, including driving herself where she wanted to go. She was very proud of this.

Services are under the Knesek Funeral Home in their chapel at 768 4th Street, Sealy, Texas, with a viewing on Saturday, May 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. and services following at 11 a.m., with interment after in the Sealy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue.
