James Robert “JR” Minyard, 67, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, colleague and friend, passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2023, at home surrounded by family and friends. JR was born in Midland to Howard and Inez Minyard.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Police Science from Sam Houston State University.

While still in college, JR joined the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) where he served in the Eastham Unit and attained the rank of Sergeant. He subsequently joined the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). As a Texas State Trooper, JR was stationed in Austin County which became his home, throughout the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Highway Patrol Riot Team, a Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer and License and Weight Trooper.

JR retired from DPS in 2007 as a Senior Trooper. He then joined the Austin County Sheriff’s Office and continued his legacy of service. He worked primarily in License and Weight enforcement and was a founding member of the Austin County Regional Special Response Team (SRT) serving as both a Team Leader and Precision Rifleman. JR officially retired from law enforcement in 2020 following a combined 43 years of loyal and faithful service.

JR was a past president of the Austin County Peace Officers Association (ACPOA) and for many years he organized the association’s annual golf tournament which raised scholarship funds. JR was a man of deep, quiet faith as a Catholic. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus for many years and especially enjoyed helping with the annual BBQ fundraiser.

JR was an avid golfer, hunter, softball player and super fan of the Houston Astros. He was a devoted friend and colleague to many.

JR and Vicki’s true love is a timeless bond that grew stronger with each passing year. When two people have been together for two decades, their connection has weathered the tests of time and emerged even more resilient. The depth of their love can be likened to a sturdy oak tree, its roots firmly entrenched in the soil of shared experiences and unwavering commitment. Through life’s difficulties, they have celebrated victories and consoled each other in defeat, and in doing so, they have found a profound sense of companionship that only years of togetherness can provide. Their love is a testament to the enduring power of devotion, trust, and the beauty of growing old together.

JR was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Inez Minyard. He is survived by his beloved wife Vicki Minyard; daughter Melissa Raeke (Reese), stepson Colton Kaminski (Stacey); grandchildren Gunner, Ellie and Wade Raeke, Maryn and Jace Kaminski; brothers Scott (Debbie), Bill (Karen) and Tom (Mechele); nieces Jessa (Jason) and Kelsey, nephew Jake.
