Last Tuesday, Sealy High School senior Breanna Brandes signed her National Letter of Intent to run track and field for the Texas State Bobcats after graduation. Brandes set and extended the school record in the pole vault to 11’ 7” this season and was recently crowned the District 24 and Area 3/4 champion to advance to the Region III Championship, one step away from a return trip to state.

Every odd-numbered year on the second Tuesday in January your Texas Legislature convenes for a period of 140 days at the Texas State Capitol to kick off a regular legislative session. During those 140 days, State Representatives and State Senators alike get to work on writing and passing legislation to address various issues affecting our state. Constitutionally, the Legislature is only required to pass a biennial state budget, which makes our budget the top priority of the legislative session. However, a legislative session is the only time a law can be created in Texas, so the eyes of Texans fall upon us every other year as we seek to make our state a better place.

The Sealy High School varsity softball team finished its regular season with a tough loss to a rival one notch higher in the district standings. The Lady Tigers had some trouble turning their hits into runs as their defense helped keep them in the game against Bellville.

Officials and family who gathered to dedicate the new Gary Kollatschny Animal Control Facility in Sealy said the building is a fitting memorial to a man who put animals and the city first. “It’s a very special occasion for all of us,” said Sealy Police Chief Jay Reeves Friday, April 22.

The Faith Academy Knight of the week is Travis Woodley. Travis returned this week from a buckle fracture in his wrist. He was able to get his timing down and had a lot of big hits. He also had some good defensive plays in key situations. The Knights launched one home run on the day. Woodley hit an inside the park home run in the fourth inning

The Sealy High School Tigers’ varsity baseball team has its sights set on finishing the regular season as high in the standings as possible before the postseason begins. The top spot in the district seems to be out of reach for the Tigers after they suffered an early week defeat to first-place Bellville, but they responded with a win in their next game against Wharton to keep their place at second secure.

Miss Brittany Guardia and Mrs. Bethany Dawson’s third grade social studies classes recently held a walk-through “living wax museum” exhibit showcasing twenty-eight heroic icons of American and World History.

Let me tell you my story about grass stains. Every laundry product known to mothers promises to make light work of those relentless stains, but after decades of pursuit they still seem to be winning the war. Such a common motherhood experience, it hardly seems as if we can spend an entire column talking about them. (This is where I chuckle and say never underestimate my gift of gab.)

As an “Army brat” I moved often during my childhood, and as an adult I never fully outgrew the desire to see new places. I have lived in eight states and visited most of the others.
