For the first time in a long time, the Brazos Cougars moved to an unblemished 4-0 heading into District 14-3A schedule after rolling over Nixon-Smiley 39-8 Friday night. “I was very proud of our guys and the way they played,” said Brazos Head Football Coach Ryan Roecker. “This was our biggest test of the season so far and they stepped up. It was homecoming week and there were a lot of distractions. Excited to be where we are right now.” The Cougars scored the first time they touched the ball against Nixon-Smiley. Brazos drove 71 yards on seven plays to get on the board first against the Mustangs. Two key scrambles from Bryson Bennett moved the ball down the field for the Cougars. A big run from freshman Jarvse Dickerson moved the ball down to the Nixon two-yard line. Two plays later, Dickerson capped off the drive by scoring from a yard out to give Brazos a 7-0 lead with 9:11 left in the first quarter. Nixon-Smiley took advantage of a miscue by Brazos to score their only points late in the first quarter. After a snap sailed over the punter’s head, the Mustangs took over at the Brazos 19 with 5:16 left in the first quarter.
