2019 Fall Sports Preview

Year two of living the dream

Whenever I answer questions like “What brought you down here all the way from Massachusetts?” I always mention the fact that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to cover Texas high school football.

I had seen all the movies and listened to Explosion in the Sky’s Friday Night Lights soundtrack a million times and I just had to get my feet on the ground to see what it really was like. I got to see a Sealy team go undefeated through the regular season and take down two good teams in the playoffs before giving a state runner-up the best playoff game they had seen. I was fortunate enough to go see some stadiums around the state and was truly blown away by the game in Pflugerville and the support garnered even with it so far away and the day after Thanksgiving.

That was just the high school coverage not even mentioning trips to TDECU Stadium and Kyle Field as well as NRG Stadium, but we’ll stay on the high school level which I have grown to appreciate even more entering my fourth year on the sidelines.

I had to see for myself what Texas football was all about down here and I feel very blessed to be sitting here a year later putting together this Fall Sports Preview for everyone again. This was the first big project of mine when I started last year but this time around I had already met and talked with all of the coaches I was calling upon again and I truly think that’s a big part of what makes this section even better than the first.

My mission has always been to report on the sports happenings around Austin County but I can’t quite be everywhere at the same time so I really rely on the coaches’ submissions to provide that coverage all the way up and down Highway 36 and must thank them for all their efforts in relaying that information on top of coaching teams to the playoffs.

This area has had no shortage of postseason runs and trophies coming back and, from talking to these coaches, it seems as though some more aren’t that far out of reach.

I hope you enjoy this section and look forward to seeing who goes how far as I am; it has been made evident that people care about their high school sports down here and I’m grateful to be able to share that passion and relay all the highlights to y’all yet again.

Thanks for letting me take up four sports pages every week and to have access to all these coaches, if you ever have any story ideas don’t hesitate to reach out to sports@sealynews.com and let me know.
