The Irene La Blanc swimming pool in Cryan Park will open for the summer, beginning Saturday, May 26, from noon to 8 p.m.
Applications, for counter help are currently being accepted by the city of Sealy. Pool management is under review and will be discussed during the May 8 city council meeting.
In previous years the city pool has been managed by the YMCA of Greater Houston. City leadership and the YMCA have been in discussion around the 2018 management agreement. Unfortunately, due to insurance requirements, the YMCA will no longer be able to manage the city pool, officials announced Friday in a press release.
“At this point, we are not able to move forward contractually with the city of Sealy and management of the city pool,” said Greg Coop, district executive for the YMCA of Greater Houston. “We have been in discussion regarding indemnification and insurance, and from our perspective, we cannot accept increased exposure. We have been advised not to sign the current agreement the city has proposed. This is not about fees. We agreed early in the conversation to accept lower management fees to help the city due to the current financial situation. We plan to continue offering sports and after-school programs, and will focus on improving the quality of our offerings.”
As a result, the YMCA will no longer offer swim team activities and swim lessons in Sealy. Participants are encouraged to contact the YMCA in Katy for alternatives.
“The YMCA plans to continue running programs in Sealy,” Coop said. “We are not walking away from the community.”
