The Tigers closed out a win Tuesday, Dec. 15, against Gonzales 52-28, and then fell to East Bernard on Friday, Dec. 18, 56-44 bringing their season record to 5-7.
School was out on Friday, Dec. 18 for the semester break, but that didn’t apply to the basketball teams that were loading the bus to continue their pre-season run.
The Tigers traveled to East Bernard to take on the Brahmas in their first meeting of the year.
The Tigers were missing senior Tajh Green Friday night due to injury who has been the high scorer for the Tigers in previous weeks.
The Brahmas were first on the board but not without the Tigers answering back just as fast.
The game was moving and seemed to be a battle of 3-pointers from the very beginning with Jason Mackey putting up one, and then CJ Brandiburg with another.
East Bernard would pull ahead for only seconds and the Tigers would bring things even.
The Brahmas were ahead near the end of the first quarter but a free throw from Christian Browning tied the end of the first quarter at 18.
The second quarter moved like the first with back-to-back shots between the Tigers and the Brahmas. BJ Randle went 4 for 4 on free throws to add to Clayton Fritch sinking a 3-pointer.
The Brahmas were assertive in their play, but the Tigers fended off their attack up the middle for a steal and came back to even it up.
The first half ended tied at 32.
The Tigers struggled through the third and fourth quarters, only putting up six points in each to the Brahmas 14-point third and 10-point fourth.
Fouls again killed any hope of Tiger momentum when the Brahmas mounted 11 points on free throws alone, in comparison to the Tigers two free throws in the second half.
Leading scorer for the East Bernard game was Derick Dabney with 10 points, who also went 2 for 4 from the charity stripe. Tyler Fuller put up nine points and went 3 for 5 on free throws. Brandiburg added seven points including one 3-pointer. Randle added six points and went 4 for 7 from the line. Fritsch had five points including a 3-pointer. Christian Browning had four points and Jason Mackey contributed three on a sole 3-pointer.
High scorers for the Gonzales game were Randle with 12 points and went 2 for 2 on free throws. Brandiburg dropped 10 points and connected on two 3-pointers. Dabney had six points and went 2 for 4 on free throws. Tyler Fuller had eight points and went 2 for 4 on free throws. Christian Browning with six points, Mackey and Cade Prihoda each hit from deep once, and Fritsch had two points.
The Tigers only have one tournament through the semester break in Gonzales where the dates and times have yet to be announced. This is a schedule change from the original tournament in East Bernard.
Regular play will resume on Jan. 5 against Bellville at home.
