With much of the greater Houston area still recovering from the damage from Hurricane Harvey, Sealy High School and Wharton High School canceled their season opener, which was set for Sept. 1.
The game was going to be the first of the season for both schools and was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Wharton. The school is an hour south of Sealy and the county was issued a voluntary evacuation as the storm hit.
Head Coach Shane Mobley confirmed the cancellation on Tuesday. This means Sealy will begin its football season against St. Pius X on Sept. 8 at home.
The matchup will provide Mobley’s defense with a tough opponent to start off the season against Pius’s wide receiver Jalen Curry. Curry transferred to St. Pius X from Stafford earlier in August and is a four-star recruit who is currently committed to Florida State University.
The Tigers defense performed well against the pass in the two preseason scrimmages including several interceptions against Royal. On the offensive side, junior Garret Zaskoda will be leading the squad at quarterback while Ivan Bolden and Matthew Lord will be the main ball carriers at running back.
The receiving corps will feature seniors Justin Eckhardt, Tyrek McNeese and Brennan Brandes while also being helped by Jared Kainer and Clay Roberts among others.
The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at T.J. Mills Stadium.
