Tigers eye regional bid

Sealy cross country competes in district championship at Royal

After wrapping up its regular season in Wallis at the Brazos Invitational on Oct. 17, the Sealy cross country teams will compete at the District 24-4A Championship at Royal High School in Brookshire Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers were looking to qualify for their first regional championship bid as a team since Anthony Branch took over cross country head coaching duties five years ago, while the boys’ team was looking for its sixth straight trip to the regional meet.

Although there is an emphasis on winning meets, Branch said he is trying to get the runners to focus more on improvement and good habits to help secure the wins.

“I feel really good about where we’re at, there’s a good chance to do really well, but like I tell the kids all the time, ‘Yeah, we want to go win. We want to do all those things, that’s easy,’” Branch said after the final regular-season meet. “At the same time, I don’t want the kids to judge themselves and our team just on if we win the district championship. We are focusing on continuing to get better each and every day.”
