Students honored by VFW

Annually the Bellville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6522 Auxiliary sponsors the Patriot’s Pen competition for junior high students. This is an essay-only competition, typewritten between 300 and 400 words. This year’s theme was “America’s Gift to My Generation”.

Left to right winners for 2017-2018 are Chesney Johnston, Faith Academy, third place at Post level receiving a $75 reward and an accomplishment certificate; Christopher Mathis, Bellville, second place at Post level receiving a $100 reward and an accomplishment certificate.

The first-place winner, Jada Burton of Sealy, received a $175 reward and an accomplishment certificate. All three winners were advanced to district level competition. They are accompanied by, left, Lucille Nehrkorn, committee chair and, right, Dewitt Nehrkorn, post commander. Unable to attend was Cheryl Blommer, co-chair.
