Sealy tennis places third in district tournament

After losing to Needville 10-3 on Oct. 5, the Sealy Tigers varsity tennis team looked to redeem themselves heading into the district tournament on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Tigers chance came early as they played the Blue Jays once again in the first round. Unfortunately, Sealy couldn’t pull off the feat and lost to Needville 10-1 in the opening round of the tournament.

“We did not play as strong with too many errors this second time we met,” Head coach Lynda Mauney said.

The Tigers did have success against Stafford later in the tournament however. The Tigers won by default and Mauney said given the team’s earlier victory over the Blue Jays, she knew the team would be able to defeat them once again.

Mauney said her biggest regret about the tournament is the fact that the team didn’t have more playing time to prepare for more competition down the road.

She also said she was proud of several players in particular.

“Danielle Thaxton, my lone senior, always shows up to play hard and did a great job. Rachel Faldyn and Tina Pham fought a tough match but lost 7-5, 6-4 on Line Two,” Mauney said. “My boys played well and I was really impressed with my Freshman boys, Blake Zaskoda, Carlos Godoy, and Cameron Eschenburg who have shown strong improvement in such a short time.”

In terms of what the team has to do to remain competitive in the future, Mauney said the players have to improve on their serving and understanding the strategy of the game better.

Mauney said the progress she has seen from the players since they began playing last spring has been nothing short of amazing.

“I was happy with most of the matches because I saw so much growth from when we first started the season,” Mauney said. “ I expect…all of my players to be stronger and more confident and competitive in the Spring.”

With such a young team, it’s clear the future is bright for Sealy tennis.
